Be the One is a National Marrow Donor Program campaign (NMDP) focused on increasing the diversity of the NMDP registry. Asians for Miracle Marrow Matches is a proud participant in this effort to increase the donor pool from the Chinese community. As always A3M has scheduled many drives to make sure that this campaign is successful for the sake of those patients who are waiting to find their matches.
It is not every day you’re asked to help save a life. For people whose best hope of cure is finding a marrow or blood cell match, your partnership to support the Be the One campaign means everything....especially for those who are from the Asian, and Pacific Islander communities.
We hope you will offer your support by hosting a drive, offering financial contributions or most of all by registering to be a marrow donor.

Urmi has aplastic anemia and needs a marrow transplant. She will most likely match someone from the South Asian community (people from India, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan, Sri Lanka). You could BE THE ONE to save her life.
Urmi is a sweet, beautiful and shy girl who is located in southern california. In spite of her health condition Urmi is a fun and loving 5 year old
girl. She plays with her dolls and watches TV. Urmi has been in and
out of the hospital so much that now she always wants to present
medical reports to the doctor, pretending to be a nurse. With your
help Urmi may really have a chance of becoming a nurse or even a
doctor. What would you do? Would you give her the gift of life?
Urmi had a cord blood transplant in October 2007. After being in the hospital
for some time she is back home and very happy. Urmi is so interested in knowing and learning new
things that she is now being schooled at home. She hopes to go back to regular school next year.
She is delighted to be with her brothers.
Please help Urmi find her marrow match. Register today! Since bone marrow is
inherited genetically, a patient's best chance of finding a match will
be from the same ethnic group. Unfortunately South Asians
represent a small percentage of the National Marrow Donor Program. You can help by registering to be a marrow donor TODAY. The first step
is to fill out a consent form and provide a swab of cheek cells.
To help Urmi and others like her:

Bone Marrow Recipient Nancy Sakakura Featured on The Rafu Shimpo
| Always the family-oriented mother, shuttling her two boys from basketball games to volleyball practices, Nancy Sakakura was on top of the world. But in 2004, she was diagnosed with myelodysplastic syndrome and came to A3M in need of a marrow donor. She spent over two years searching and was able to find two matches during that time, however, they both became “unavailable” at the last minute. Fortunately, a third match was finally found. This time, the donor went forward – allowing Nancy to have a much needed transplant.
The Rafu Shimpo (Saturday, December 16, 2006 edition) documents Nancy’s prolonged search to find matching bone marrow donor and highlights the need for committed donors. |

May I first thank the staff and volunteers for their outstanding efforts for A3M's October 15 th event. It was a tremendous success with a sold-out dinner and a sold-out show. A number of people have asked, “How are you going to top that next year?”
For the moment tho', shall we bask in the fact that all aspects of the evening were outstanding—from the reception to the celebrity MC's, the entertainers from Las Vegas, wonderful food, guests and supporters, orchids, hula, donor video, stories shared and much more!
